Membership Renewal

Dear friends and colleagues,

It's time to renew your ChLA membership! As you know, membership has its privileges as well as responsibilities, and membership in ChLA is a sweet deal for all. It's also never been easier, as you can pay your dues through the Members page on the ChLA website: http://www.childlitassn.org/members

What do you get as a ChLA member? For starters, Children's Literature (the annual) and Children's Literature Association Quarterly. You may have access to these electronically through your institution, but I've found it very convenient to have physical copies at hand. I'm more likely to skim an issue when I have it in front of me, which gives a nice snapshot of what's going on in the field. As a ChLA member, you also get a discounted registration rate for our annual conference, and this year's meeting will be held in San Antonio, Texas, from June 28-30, 2018, with the provocative theme of "Refreshing Waters/Turbulent Waters." Hope to see you there! Other benefits of membership include eligibility to vote in ChLA elections, eligibility for ChLA awards and grants, and shared information about job opportunities, calls for papers, and other professional matters.

Just as important, you get the satisfaction of helping to support your academic community. Your ChLA dues help to fund grants that support faculty and graduate student research in children's literature, as well as awards that honor excellent scholarly work in our field. You may know that in recent years, we've relied heavily on royalty revenue from Project Muse, and that revenue is beginning to decline due to a number of factors, not all of them bad (for instance, open access publishing). Please do keep clicking on our journal articles if you have access to Project Muse, and please do renew your dues, as every penny helps keep our operation afloat.

This is an exciting time for the organization. We have a number of initiatives going, among them long-term strategic planning, greater publicity and outreach efforts, and intensified commitment to diversity and internationalization. Not only do we need your membership; we need your ideas and smarts and guidance. Please renew and get or stay as involved as you can – please run for our committees, too!

My best wishes for the coming year, and thank you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing you in June 2018.
